Advisors, also known as brokers and financial planners, are an important part of mutual fund distribution. From an investors perspective an advisor will help the client determine their risk profile, and tailor a portfolio of mutual funds to suit the investor's goals and objectives. Advisors will usually be compensated through commissions for sale of funds, and may also charge monitoring or portfolio management fees. It is important to select an adviser carefully, based on their professional credentials e.g. CFP designation, experience, and expertise. It is also important to be clear on what fees are charged, and what services are provided - most professional advisers will supply some form of disclosure documentation.
