A portfolio is a collection of assets, investments, securities, and instruments. A portfolio may be made up of a holding of several mutual funds, but it could also contain individual equities, bonds, and other assets. The term portfolio is often used as a means of assessing the overall exposure and return that an investor faces. For example an investor will need to account for the returns of all the assets they hold to determine whether or not the are better off each year, they will also need to assess what sort of risk exposure they have at an aggregate level. The term portfolio is also used to describe the holdings within a managed fund. Portfolio analysis is the process of analysing, optimising, and evaluating the performance and the risk-return profile at the portfolio level.
