Ticker Symbol

A ticker symbol is a short hand code for a company listed on an exchange. For example in the US, the NYSE allows companies to have a ticker between 1 and 3 letters, while the Nasdaq offers up to 5 letters. In most western countries it is standard to use a series of letters for the ticker symbol - usually letters that sound like or have something to do with the company name. For most Asian stock exchanges it is more common to use a series of numbers for the stock ticker e.g. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China – 1398.HK [Hong Kong], China CITIC Bank Corp Ltd – 601998 [Shanghai – China]. All exchange traded funds have their own ticker symbols.

Synonyms: Ticker, Stock Ticker, Ticker Symbol, Company code
