Transfer Agent

A transfer agent is an organization that prepares and maintains records relating to shareholder accounts, in some countries this is also called a registry company. A mutual fund will usually hire a transfer agent to undertake this administrative work, but some larger companies may in-source it or take care of the administration in house if they have sufficient resources and scale. For an investor this means you may receive correspondence from both the fund manager or fund provider, and the registry or transfer agent.

Synonyms: Registry, Outsourcing admin, Fund administration
