Volume refers to the number of shares, units, or contracts traded during a specific period. Exchanges track and report volume data, and distribute it via data vendors. Market analysts and investors sometimes refer to volume as a gauge for activity and as a confirmation of events and signals. Volume is also monitored by exchanges and regulatory supervisors to detect any abnormal behavior e.g. market manipulation, signs of insider trading, and others (e.g. a spike in trading activity may signal something is going on).

Synonyms: No. shares trade, No. traded
