An investor is a person (natural or artificial/legal) who takes an interest in an asset or security with the intention of realizing a future gain; through appreciation of capital, and/or through earning income and distributions. Typically an investor will be motivated by investment objectives, and will have risk preferences (e.g. risk averse) depending on their circumstances and psychology. Investors may be shareholders, unit holders, counter-parties, owners, etc depending on the nature of their investment. Investors may be classified as retail investors or institutional investors depending on their portfolio size and characteristics.
